There are 5 family birthdays, Mother's Day, Etsy orders to fill and I'm getting ready for my booth at a local farmer's market. Not to mention Memorial Day, which is a big deal in my family, school winding down and graduations. WHEW!!! Needless to say, my hook has been hot.

This is one of the many things that has been on my hook. This patriotic garden flag can double as a wall hanging. The nice thing about this is it can be displayed from Memorial Day clear through Labor Day. :) The pattern is from Snappy Tots in her Ravelry store. I love her stuff and this pattern is great because she gives directions on how to make this in to several different things.

Once I get through this month, believe it or not it's going to be time to start thinking about the holiday season. YIKES! Guess I better get to hookin'!

Well sadly, I think this one is going to go in the frog pile to be reworked. :(

It's a gorgeous pattern but it turned out gigantic, I think due to the yarn I used. Even with leaving off the last two rows this thing is almost down to my knees. I thought about finishing it up (it's just tacked together in the pic) and using it for a bathing suit cover up this summer but it's such a pretty pattern I want to be able to wear it out and about. This in no way reflects on the pattern or the designer. I encourage you to try this lovely design out if you are looking for a pretty summer top. Just keep in mind that if you use something similar to Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton it works up much looser and stretches.

*Sighhhhh* well...back to the drawing board.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04467830130826659582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1616027786201830631.post-69707805486188480312015-04-21T16:20:00.000-04:002015-06-14T09:05:35.215-04:00Squares vs. Inches (or how to size a C2C)I belong to several Facebook crochet groups and invariably the same topics pop up periodically. The one that sets my teeth on edge every single time is when a poster asks, "How many squares should my (C2C) blanket be?" There simply is no right answer to this question. "Why?" you may ask? The reason is, there are so many variables that it is impossible to give an accurate answer. Blanket sizes are based on inches, not squares, stitches or rows. The size of your squares in your C2C depend on the type/weight of the yarn you are using, your hook size and your tension.

For instance, most of the time I use a worsted weight (4) yarn like Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn or Red Heart With Love and my go-to hook is my Susan Bates bamboo handle J hook. I think my tension is pretty "regular", not too tight, not too loose. So I can count my squares and tell you how many I have using those variables but if you are using a different yarn, hook or your tension is different then your blanket will come out a different size than mine. The "safe" answer is the dimension of the blanket in inches. There are many handy charts out there if you Google blanket sizes.

Below I have crocheted 3 different swatches of 5 squares (or blocks) using different weights of yarns and different hooks. See the difference? The individual pictures indicate the yarn & hook used on each swatch.

This is why you shouldn't tell someone their blanket should be XX squares. If you made the top swatch into a blanket and went with 50 squares it would end up being about 70" square. The bottom swatch would result in about a 25" square blanket. That's a big difference and could end up with some disappointing results.

I think too often we assume that everyone crochets like we do so our formula will work for them. No one crochets exactly like you and that is part of what is wonderful about this amazing craft we all love.

Spring is in the air and it's a perfect time to freshen up my wardrobe with this lacy tunic.

The pattern comes from BeACrafter, she has so many beautiful designs on her site that I can't wait to try. The original design calls for 200 grams of tape or ribbon yarn but I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton. I love the way this is turning out, it is so soft and has a wonderful drape. However, 200 grams of ILTC is not nearly enough. I'm not quite finished but I will have ended up using almost 400 grams/13 ounces. Thank goodness I had extra on hand!

One thing I love about this pattern is it's worked in two identical pieces then stitched together to form the neckline and sleeves. Since this is my first foray into clothing I think this will be a great starter project.

If all goes as planned I should have this finished up in the next few days and I'll put out a full review and of course post pics of the finished product.

The stitches in this pattern are fairly easy after you get the hang of the criss-cross stitch. After that you just have to resign yourself to the fact of weaving in the oh-so-many ends that you have. Thank goodness for my Susan Bates finishing needles!
As I was cruising Pinterest I found some slippers and decided to give them a go. The tutorial at 2createincolor was super easy to follow and she has a link to a video on how to do the Magic Ring that explains it better than any other place I've found.
Here is part two of The Craft Collaboration for my yarn storage system. What do you think? Personally, I LOVE it! It's hanging on the wall right next to me so I have easy access to a lot of my skeins without having to dig through a tub. My Bernat Baby Blanket yarn is still in the tub because the huge skeins won't fit up there but those are easy to dig out. (Hubby is going to make another board just to hold those). The nice thing about this is it's totally customizable to fit whatever you need. It can even be made as a free standing unit if you don't have the wall space.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04467830130826659582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1616027786201830631.post-5763507010560494832014-11-02T18:10:00.000-05:002015-04-21T21:27:37.308-04:00Bring it on Mother Nature!

I'm ready for winter! Ok, not really because I hate cold weather but at least I'll look good when I'm out there slogging through the drifts. I picked up a skein of this yarn during one of my many trips to JoAnn's and had no idea what I was going to do with it. (One of those "Oooooh, look! It's pretty!!" purchases.) I got it home and decided I'd try to make a scarf with it. Oh man is this yarn awesome! It works up so easy using the V-stitch and it is so soft. I ended up going back and picking up 3 more skeins because I loved it so much. After I completed the scarf I decided to try my hand at making a headband and a pair of fingerless gloves/wrist warmers.

The picture doesn't do this set justice. The yarn I used is Deborah Norville Serenity® Chunky in Pink Candy. This close up shows you the true colors, isn't it pretty? I'd love to have a reason to buy skein after skein of this in every color made. Maybe once I win the lottery....

It would be ok if everything I crocheted was in a variegated black and white motif but I like color. I have been racking my brain to come up with a way of keeping as much of the pet hair out of my projects as possible. It's great if I come across a center pull skein because then the little bugger isn't rolling around on my couch as I work. Unfortunately I'm learning that most skeins aren't center pull (unless I'm doing something wrong). I tried putting my yarn in one of those nifty Snapware containers, a big plastic food storage bowl and even an empty coffee canister. Those worked ok, but still not quite what I was looking for. I stumbled across this idea on Pintrest the other night:

Genius!! How simple! How thrifty! But hmmm...how can I put my own spin on it, since I didn't have a box like that or knitting needles? Enter The Craft Collaboration between the hubby and I. He's a pretty handy guy to have around and I knew we could come up with something. Instead of the knitting needle we figured dowel rods would work just as well. I happened to have a Sterilite "mesh" basket to replace the cardboard box. A trip to Lowe's and 3 rods later my yarn holding system was complete! He made 6 rods, 3 long and 3 short to fit my various skeins. I proudly threaded my first skein and got to work....until it was time to pull more yarn and we had a problem. It didn't rotate off the way I thought but it did work for keeping my yarn off the furniture and collecting pet hair. Time for tweaking. I had noticed that when the yarn was just coiled around the skein (a product of ripping out a mistake) it worked great. Since almost all of my yarn is wound like the pic above I needed to come up with a solution. I know I could go out and buy a yarn winder to make my entire stash into center pull balls but those suckers are expensive and I'd rather spend my cash on the yarn itself. Once again, time for another collaboration between the hubby and I. (Did I mention he's handy to have around?) We figured out that an electric yarn winder is like a drill so out to his workshop he went. He came back in the house with his cordless, variable speed electric drill fitted with a cut off golf club shaft. (Could we be any more redneck?) It.Works.Great!

I can make cookies, cakes, brownies and bread but for some unknown reason biscuits eluded me. The last batch I made before I discovered this life saving recipe was so bad that my then-teenage stepson and my dogs wouldn't even eat them. Those were some BAD biscuits.
I'd heard of 7-Up biscuits for years but figured there was no point in attempting them because, well...me and biscuits. I finally screwed up enough courage one evening to throw these together and FINALLY SUCCESS!!!
These biscuits are so good and so easy. I've rolled them out and cut them in circles and I've just patted the dough into the pan, both ways turned out well. The smaller recipe makes 9 biscuits so with the two of us there are always leftovers and they make great Sunday morning biscuits and gravy.
I was searching for granny square patterns and came across this site. I can't wait to try this and I'm thinking that if you use a more solid granny square pattern you wouldn't even need the fabric liner. This may be the perfect little project for football Sunday.
Not bad for my first completed scarf, if I do say so myself. One thing this project taught me is although these yarns are beautiful in the skein, they are not the easiest for me to crochet with. I haven't actually decided if this is a short scarf or a long cowl. Either way, it will definitely keep your neck warm in cold weather.

This ended up being 41"x7" (52" with the fringe) done in the double-v stitch so it works up pretty fast.
Materials:

1 skein Red Heart Grande in Orchid

11.5mm "P" crochet hook

I woke up this morning and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to jump on the blog bandwagon since I am in craft-mode. So, here I am. I hope this will be a place where I can share my crafting/baking triumphs and fails, pass on some "I-want-to-do-this-someday" posts from other crafty people and just have fun.
